Vocabulary Learning Strategies Employed by Eighth Grade Students in Reading Comprehension of Recount Text

Abstract

Realizing that vocabulary is an important thing in a language, many efforts to help learners to master vocabulary have become crucial. One of the ways to help learners to master vocabulary is by using learning strategies. This study aims to investigate how the Eighth graders students apply vocabulary learning strategy of Planning, Sources, Processes in reading comprehension of recount text proposed by Nation. This study used the basic interpretative study. The subjects were 25 eight grade students of junior high school students of SMP Bina Mulya. The data of this research were the students expression while using vocabulary learning strategies in their learning process. The data were collected through observation and interview technique. The data were collected through observation, and interview technique. The observations were done four times and the interview was done once after the class was over. The result shows that they employed Planning Strategy by choosing words involves the various levels of vocabulary; choosing the aspects of word knowledge involves form, meaning, and use; choosing strategies by consulting dictionary, asking teacher, and asking classmates; and planning repetition by writing the new words they got on the book. They also employed Source Strategy by analyzing the word part; using context by guessing from context; consulting a reference source in L1 or L2 by consulting dictionary; and using parallels in L1 and L2 by translating L2 into L1. And last but not least they also employed Processes Strategy by noticing, retrieving, and generating by putting the word in a vocabulary notebook or list, putting the word on to a word card, orally repeating the word, and visually repeating the word.

Abstrak
Merasa bahwa kosakata adalah hal yang penting dalam sebuah Bahasa, banyak usaha untuk membantu para pembelajar untuk menguasai kosakata telah menjadi hal yang krusial. Salah satu cara untuk membantu para pembelajar untuk menguasai kosakata adalah dengan menggunakan strategi pembelajaran. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi bagaimanakah para siswa SMP kelas VIII mengaplikasikan strategy pembelajaran kosakata Planning, Sources, and Processes pada Reading Comprehension Teks Recount yang dianjurkan oleh Nation. Penelitian ini menggunakan Basic Interpretative Study. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 25 siswa kelas VIII di SMP Bina Mulya. Data pada penelitian ini adalah ungkapan siswa ketika menggunakan strategi-strategi pembelajaran kosakata dalam proses pembelajaran mereka. Data tersebut dikumpulkan melalui pengamatan, dan wawancara. Pengamatan dilakukan empat kali dan wawancara dilakukan sekali setelah pembelajaran berakhir. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa mereka menggunakan Strategi Planning dengan memilih kata-kata yang melibatkan tingkatan kosakat; memilih aspek-aspek pengetahuan kata termasuk bentuk, arti, dan penggunaan kosakat; memilih strategi dengan melihat kamus, bertanya kepada guru dan teman. Mereka juga menggunakan Strategi Sources dengan menganalisa kata, menggunakan konteks, melihat kamus, dan menggunakan perbandingan pada bahasa pertama dan kedua. Yang tak kalah penting mereka juga menggunakan Strategi Processes dengan Noticing, retrieving, and generating yaitu dengan menulis di buku catatan, mengulang secara lisan dan tulisan..
